My thoughts on the 2000 Ford Contour SVT with a 2.5L v6 and 5 speed manual transmission: At first glance, the SVT contour looks like a Ford Taurus that was stuffed into a copy machine set at 75%. But take a glance under the hood and you’ll notice the difference. Step behind the wheel and any idea that the SVT Contour is another run-of-the-mill compact sedan, disappears. With the smaller body structure of the contour platform, and a 2.5L v6 paired to a 5 speed manual transmission, the SVT Contour might be the most unexpected fun I’ve had behind the wheel. V6’s have really been growing on me recently. Having grown up with either a V8, or an Inline 4, there has always been a large gap of power in my mind. So while it may seem that a V6 is the obvious middle ground, until about two years ago I never had much experience with them. Now that I have I’ve concluded one thing: The V6’s biggest opponent is weight. A V6 Ford F-150 would lose a race against paint drying. Why? Because the F-150 chassis is heavier than a collapsed star. But the Contour isn’t nearly as heavy. No, it’s not a lightweight fastback, but at 3,110 pounds for a four door sedan it’s the anorexic girl of the 2000’s ford lineup. So why did I say the SVT Contour “Might be the most unexpected fun I’ve had behind the wheel”. Well look at it. Does it look fast? Does it look fun? No and No. It looks likes someone put a body kit on a Ford Contour and called it a day. But that’s the charm of the SVT Contour. To an untrained eye, it looks like another use-and-abuse economy car from yester-year. But I promise you, it’s not. The v6 revs higher than any eco-box of its day, as well as the transmission is geared toward more spirited driving rather than up-shfit up-shift up-shift gas-saving driving. The SVT Contour is an interesting vehicle to say the least. It doesn’t make sense why it really exists, but I’m glad it does. I’m glad Ford, for lack of better terms, said “Screw it” and just built a car for a select few fans. I Imagine the creator of the SVT contour is similar to the creator of the triple Baconator. “Let’s take a cheeseburger, and just throw two more patties on it and like 8 pounds of bacon”. The idea of being extra just for fun, is something the auto industry is lacking these days. Sure, maybe Chrysler is going through that phase as it seems like they’ll stick their 707hp engine in any chassis they can find, but I wish more companies made more unnecessary cars yet fun cars.
