Brexiter berates EU parliament with 'I told you so' quip Scottish politician Alyn Smith has been given a standing ovation after begging his European colleagues not to "let Scotland down". Speaking at an emergency debate at the European Parliament, the Scottish National Party member told his counterparts: "I represent Scotland within this house, and where I'm proudly Scottish, I'm also proudly European." Last week the UK voted by 52 to 48 to leave the European Union after 43 years. Mr Smith begged members of the European Parliament to appreciate Scotland's wish to remain in the EU. "I want my country to be internationalist, cooperative, ecological, fair, European," he said. "I demand that status, and this is for esprit European be respected. Please, I beg you, chers collègues, do not let Scotland down now." His powerful speech followed scathing comments by the leader of the UK Independence Party, Nigel Farage who left the entire parliament seething. Mr Farage told the European Parliament that he had the last laugh after Britain defied their warnings and voted to quit the EU. "Isn't it funny. When I came here 17 years ago and I said I wanted to lead a campaign to get Britain to leave the EU, you all laughed at me but you are not laughing now," Farage told the members of Europe’s parliament. Farage said the European Union was "in denial" about its failing and wrong-headed ambitions for a united Europe from which voters were turning away in droves. "You have imposed on them a political union and when the people in 2005 in the Netherlands and in France voted against you, you simply ignored them and brought the Lisbon Treaty in by the back door!" he said in an emergency debate on Britain's Brexit vote. Going into the chambers in Brussels, Farage embraced European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker, who in his own address asked why the UKIP leader had even bothered to turn up. "That's the last time you are applauding here," Mr Juncker said. "I am really surprised that you are here. You were fighting for the exit, the British people voted in favour of the exit. Why are you here?" But Farage would not be denied his moment, saying Thursday's vote was "seismic" with far-reaching implications beyond Britain's immediate future.
