What's the BEST Hot Hatch in 2025? VW Golf R vs Honda Civic Type R

👋 If you are looking to spend $48,000 on a hot hatch, what are you buying? Today I drive the 2025 Volkswagen Golf R alongside the FL5 Honda Civic Type-R! Both cars on the new market cost about the same but offer a completely different hot hatch experience. The Honda Civic Type-R FL5 gives you a thrilling driving experience. Handling is amazing with tight responsive steering and flat cornering. This car is a track car meant to be thrashed around. Overall driving is smooth enough but a bit rough around the edges. Very roomy car in general with lots of space and enough technology. Downsides are it can be slightly noisy on bad roads and FWD has it's limitations. But it's a ultra fun car with lot of room! VW Golf R is very refined feeling and very nice and smooth to drive. Plenty of amenities like vented seats, sunroof, heated rear seats even with climate vents in back. AWD and a DCT makes this handle anything you throw it's way! Golf R is a bit faster too with more power and uninterrupted shifts. While the Type-R is a bit more engaging from the manual transmission, some like the versatility of a DCT. The Golf R isn't exactly exciting tho. It's a bit numb to drive since there is no drama to how it drives. Steering is a bit vague too with a rubbery feeling and a delay in response. It makes up for that with speed and precision, but lacks the driver feedback of the Type-R. Just like the Type-R lacks the refinements and versatility.
