From TrekWorks Welcome modelers, This is a video review and build up of the Round 2 Models just released U.S.S. Enterprise Tholian Web Edition. This kit comes molded in a glow in the dark styrene plastic to give the appearance of the effect from the U.S.S. Defiant as seen in the classic episode of Star Trek TOS. There are no changes to this release from the basic AMT Enterprise kits from the 80's till present. The grid lines on the saucer top are gone as seen on the Ertl molds of this model. You do get two complete Tholian web spinner ships which have not been included with any past versions of the model which are pretty close in look and scale as the screen versions. Strange as it seems Round 2 did not include the new pedestal and ball socket display stand that is included with all of their other AMT Repop Star Trek kits. Its the same flimsy one that's been around since 1968. As for painting this model you will have some decisions to make. If you build it as is to take advantage of the glow plastic, you'll only be able to paint some of the parts or you end up with a strange looking ship when you view it in the dark. Anything you cover with paint doesn't glow. So you will have to decide how far to take your painting if going this route. The other option which allows you to paint the model and use fillers to clean up the gaps in the molds etc, is to use a color coat of glow paint. There are several brands in both spray and brush on available. In tests I did the glow paint was not very bright in appearance and did not glow for very long. I decided to clean up the gaps with sanding as best as I could and painted on only some of the details of the edges and outer pieces of the model. I then applied the decals and finished by using an airbrush with shades of Gray and medium brown to do a light weathering effect on the surface. It really helped to make it look a lot less like bare plastic in normal light. Careful not to overdo the weathering as you can see any painting done in while its glowing in low light. This is a nice clever marketing release of this model by Round 2. Its the basic Enterprise Kit Molded in glow plastic with the updated and improved decal sheet and 2 Tholian Spinner ships. Its a nice model and it builds well but at a price of almost $20.00 over the basic Enterprise kit it comes to mind is the value there? I think the answer is yes just for the fun factor alone and the great packaging. This is a fun kit and with a little thought about the painting, most modelers should enjoy building this kit.
