Originally streamed Jan 28, 2024. Been wanting to try the Yakuza series for a long time. Everyone always told me to skip the early games and start with one of the later ones, like Zero... well, I can now confidently say they were WRONG. Really really WRONG. Yakuza 1 was the perfect game to start with! Honestly from looking at all of the games, I feel like 1 and 2 may possibly end up being my favorites, they have so much of that PS2 energy that I love. Yakuza is a Grand Theft Auto style open world game, mission based with a ton of side missions and extra things to do. With these kind of games, the side missions are often not that worthwhile, but in Yakuza they are maybe a little more worthwhile than normal. (Still not all of them are worth doing.) This game really is quite similar to GTA, but the key to why it's good is very simple: Japanese aesthetic and setting. And for that matter, the PS2 look of this game in particular is awesome. I have looked at some of the more recent Yakuzas and it's funny to me how some of the character designs don't look as good... odd. Another thing that makes Yakuza games great is what they share in common with Shenmue: smaller open world games are awesome! It's such a shame that "open world" is so often thought of as having to be these giant padded bland worlds. Shenmue took a completely different tack, rather than gigantic and sparse, it was small and dense with things to do. Yakuza is pretty similar, relatively smaller areas that are dense and fun to explore. The gameplay and combat of this game is definitely a bit rougher and less polished, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It just means it has a bit more of a learning curve. I think the combat has a very good feel though, it's very fun to try to master and very satisfying. It has a lot of depth. It also helps that the story and characters are very likable and entertaining. This first Yakuza is quite great with it's story, it makes for a great introduction to the main character, and to the setting. It has terrific setpieces and an excellent climax. The soundtrack is excellent, too! Overall very catchy music, and a couple of tracks have really stayed with me. This game has a remake called "Kiwami." Personally, I think you should ABSOLUTELY NOT play that remake until you've tried the original game. Based on what I've seen, the whole visual style seems heavily degraded even if everything looks more realistic. The really clean, slightly more anime, and far more stylish PS2 version really shines.
