A first birthday is always cause for celebration. But for baby Thomas, it’s a medical miracle. Fewer than 200 babies in the U.S. have ever been born without a trachea, and none have survived – until Thomas. Watch his inspiring journey and help us wish him a Happy Birthday! Thomas was born on April 7, 2016, without a trachea. His condition is known as trachea agnesis. Immediately after being born at Ministry St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital in Marshfield, Wis., doctors performed emergency surgery to get air to his lungs. Once stabilized, Thomas was then transferred to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee where over the next several months he underwent many groundbreaking procedures — including detaching his esophagus from his stomach and connecting it to his lungs to serve as his trachea — to enable him to breathe on his own.
