Over the past three years, the Research to Commercialization (R2C) Program has worked to transform how research moves from laboratories into real-world impact across Kenya. Implemented by the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) with support from Viktoria Ventures and ecosystem partners, and co-funded by FCDO through the RISA Fund, British Council, and The Lemelson Foundation, R2C focused on strengthening the systems that enable research commercialization — not just supporting individual projects. Between 2022 and 2025, R2C shifted Kenya’s approach from isolated pilots to institutionally anchored commercialization pipelines. By engaging university leadership, strengthening governance, operationalizing Technology Transfer Offices, and aligning research with market demand, the program helped universities and research institutions become better equipped to support innovation at scale. R2C Impact at a Glance -25 universities strengthened research commercialization systems -14+ Technology Transfer Offices established or strengthened -39 research-based innovations supported across priority sectors -KES 605.6M (USD 4.68M) mobilized for commercialization -438 jobs supported (76% women, 6% persons with disabilities) -10,000+ customers/users reached through market-ready solutions As Kenya moves from pilots to pipelines, R2C leaves behind stronger institutions, clearer pathways to market, and a foundation for sustained, inclusive innovation-led growth. This journey reflects what is possible when leadership, institutions, markets, and partnerships align around impact.
