Dear Enemy is the 1915 sequel to Jean Webster's popular novel Daddy-Long-Legs. The novel takes the form of epistolary fiction, meaning it is told entirely through letters, primarily those written by Sallie McBride to her friend Judy Abbott (the heroine of Daddy-Long-Legs) and other acquaintances. The story follows the spirited Sallie, an idealistic but inexperienced New York socialite, who is persuaded by Judy to take over the role of Superintendent of the John Grier Home orphanage. Sallie soon discovers the institution is a cheerless, dilapidated place, suffering from outdated methods and poor care. Sallie’s letters chronicle her relentless and often hilarious battle to modernize the asylum, improve the lives of the children, and balance a tight budget. A major source of conflict—and romantic tension—comes from her frequent correspondence with the Home's abrasive, traditional, yet principled Scottish consulting physician, Dr. Alexander "Sandy" MacRae, whom she affectionately nicknames her "Dear Enemy." The book is a charming blend of social commentary, comedy, and slow-burn romance, addressing progressive issues of child welfare and institutional reform in the early 20th century. 👍 If you enjoyed this classic novel, please Like, Share, and Subscribe to our channel for more full audiobooks, classic literature, and timeless stories! #dearenemy #jeanwebster #audiobookwithtext
