Ajab Khan telling his story in this short film. Fabrics rich in color emerging from a dark boiling liquid in dyer’s cauldron have been his first fascinating exposure to colors, that made a strong impact on his artistic expression. A self-taught painter, Ajab Khan, was born to a working-class family that migrated to Dera Ismail Khan from India. Coloring the black and white pictures from the family album by applying thin layers of paint on them made from fabric dyeing pigments was his favorite activity during his childhood. Noticing his keen interest in colors and talent to draw, his father would buy him colored pencils to play with. The local workshops of commercial signboard painters and wall-chalking artisans served him as institutions to get familiar with the fundamentals of calligraphy and painting. “I would make brushes by joining pieces of old rugs with small sticks to do wall-chalking. During high school, my drawing teacher Malik Iqbal once punished me hard because he mistook my confident freehand lines as those drawn with scale. Later, he realized that he was wrong. He then bought me brushes and paint and taught me how to do calligraphy with brushes (as compensation),” he vividly recalls. A frequenter of Lahore, he would go to Lahore Arts Council, Alhamra, and National College of Arts (NCA). Meeting with various artists helped him develop his skills. With seven solo shows, various awards and numerous group shows in Pakistan and abroad to his credit, he has been working as a professional painter since 1994. He was working in various genres but following the advice of painters Ahmad Khan and Mohsin Jaffery, after 2005 he focused only on landscapes. He got a keen eye to capture the beauty which is reflected in his selection of subjects. Radiant colors, applied with the palette knife, create rough textures and a very strong visual impact. He smartly hints at the mundane rural life and agrarian activities connected to the landscapes he portrays. Developing a major part of his works from photographs bars him from portraying the wide range of hues, especially the variety of greens that remains limited. At some places, the diction of photographs has slightly eclipsed the diction of a sublime painting. On the other hand, detailed studies and mature compositions are the strong elements of his visuals.
