The University of Hawaiʻi beach volleyball team opens the 2026 season this week under new head coach Danny Alvarez, hosting the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic from Feb. 19–21 at Queen’s Beach. The three-day tournament brings together six top-10 teams to start the year, with No. 16 Hawaiʻi joined by No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Stanford, No. 4 USC, No. 6 Texas, No. 7 Loyola Marymount and No. 9 Cal. The field will play a round-robin format, with seven matches contested each day. Alvarez begins his first season as head coach and his 10th overall with the program. The veteran coach, who has more than 30 years of experience, previously served as an assistant with the BeachBows from 2012–19 and again during the 2023 season. He played a key role in building the program’s foundation and helping Hawaiʻi develop into a national contender, a run that included six consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, three Big West titles and the program’s first No. 1 national ranking in 2015. Hawaiʻi returns 12 players from last season’s team that finished 14–21 and ranked No. 19 in the final AVCA poll. The BeachBows’ roster totals 19 players, led by 2025 All-Big West selections Sarah Burton and Caprice Lorenzo. Other returning contributors include former all-conference players Sydney Amiatu, Sydney Miller and Julia Lawrenz, along with the return of a healthy Julia Thelle. The BeachBows also welcome seven newcomers, highlighted by midyear transfer Izadora Stedile, an All-American indoor player at Hofstra, and Kiera Cornman, the 2024 New York State Gatorade Player of the Year. Hawaiʻi’s roster features players from Australia, Brazil, Guam and Norway, as well as five U.S. states — Arizona, California, Colorado, New York and Texas.
