Winter losses are never easy... especially when a colony goes into winter looking strong. In this video, I walk through my first deadout of the winter, assessing the hive in real time and talking through my thought process as I try to understand what went wrong. This was a full, double brood box colony going into winter, yet when I checked it there were very few bees left, plenty of stores, and no obvious signs of attack or disturbance. Rather than jumping straight to conclusions, this video focuses on how to assess a winter loss properly, including what to look for and what different signs can tell you. Winter losses happen to even experienced beekeepers, and understanding why they happen is far more useful than pretending they don’t. If you keep bees, or are thinking about starting, this is a realistic look at the kind of problem-solving we all have to do sooner or later. As always, this isn’t about blame or panic... just learning, observing, and doing better next time. 🐝 Thanks for watching, and feel free to share your own winter-loss experiences or thoughts in the comments.
