Talk by Dr. Mihalis Kritikos (Associate Fellow, Brussels School of Governance (Vrije Universiteit Brussel); Principal Digital Adviser to MEP Eva Kaili, Chair of the Future of Science and Technology Panel in the European Parliament (STOA) and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence (C4AI)) on EU ethics and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as part of the BSoG | AWS lecture series on digital transformation in the EU. Description of talk This lecture focuses on the development of an EU governance framework in the field of AI with a special emphasis on its ethical component (high-level principles, codes, mechanisms). Special attention is given to the recent European Commission's proposal for an AI Act and the work of the European Parliament in this field. In this video, Dr. Kritikos discusses whether the pervasive, growing and transformative character of these technologies fit well with the established EU institutional and legal acquis. The talk touches upon the policy attempts of other stakeholders to frame an ethical regime on AI and shape this disruptive technological sector in a human-centric way as well as on the main challenges associated with the mushrooming of ethical initiatives across the world. BSoG | AWS lecture series on digital transformation in the EU This lecture series on digital transformation in the EU is the result of a partnership between the Centre for Digitalisation, Democracy and Innovation at the Brussels School of Governance (Vrije Universiteit Brussel) and the AWS Institute. We explore how digitalisation is transforming our public sectors and societies, ranging from Public Trust and Disinformation to Digital Sovereignty and Ethical AI, and provide snapshots of the latest research and policy insights, and thus serve as primers, on the respective topic. In each video, we answer five key questions: What are we discussing? Why is the topic important? What does research tell us? How does digitalisation in this field impact the public sector and the EU? What are the key takeaways and next steps? For more information on the Centre for Digitalisation, Democracy and Innovation, please visit: https://brussels-school.be/research/d...
