(6 Dec 2005) 1. Wide of exterior of courtroom ++ DISTORTED VOICE ++ 2. Cutaway of curtain 3. Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin UPSOUND: (Arabic) Distorted voice of witness A: (Responding to the judge's comment: "You didn't describe the punishments in detail") "It was horrific. There were some women tied with their legs up and they were shot with electricity. What is that? (rhetorical question) At the Dujail there were women with broken ribs, broken legs and broken backs." 4. Cutaway of curtain 5. Curtain closing shielding media from court room, defendants sitting in foreground (this happened just before the court was allowed to see witness and the defence lawyers allowed to interview her face to face) 6. Cutaway of Amin 7. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi leader: "Do you think Saddam would investigate himself? I have just been shown a video, I will give you a piece of information, when a head of state is shot at, his bodyguards don't run after the shooters but they come close to him and protect him. So the witness on one hand is saying it was the police, and the other hand is saying it was the bodyguard. I think he is confused. The attack was the issue. It wasn't a question of do I have a personal vendetta against somebody. If it wasn't Iran who ordered them to shoot me, they could never have done this." 8. Cutaway of judges (soundbite continues) 9. Cutaway of defendants 10. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin: "The defendant is asking you what is the relation between him and the execution of your son?" 11. Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin UPSOUND: (Arabic) "Witness C": "It's all to do with him, he is the head of the intelligence isn't he? (referring to Barazan, former head of intelligence)." 12. Barazan (upsound continues) 13. Cutaway of curtain 14. Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin (soundbite of Saddam begins) 15. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi leader: "Have you asked the President Saddam Hussein, was he beaten or tortured? And that is your duty, have you asked the vice president and the other defendants, were they tortured while in detention? Please, Mr. Judge, do not accept any insult to Iraq. It doesn't matter if he insults Saddam Hussein, because the Americans and the Zionists want to execute Saddam Hussein. What does the execution of Saddam Hussein matter? He has given himself to Iraq from the day he was at school and has been sentenced to death three times already. Saddam Hussein and his comrades are not afraid of execution." 16. Saddam with other defendants (soundbite continues) 17. Cutaway of Amin 18. Wide of defendants STORYLINE: Three witnesses testified on Tuesday in the trial of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone. Speaking from behind a screen, with her voice disguised to protect her identity, the first witness wept as she told of beatings and electric shocks at the hands of Saddam Hussein's agents in the trial of the former president and seven lieutenants. Saddam sat impassively as the woman, known only as "Witness A," told the court how she and dozens of other families from the town of Dujail were arrested in a crackdown after a 1982 assassination attempt against Saddam. Several times, the woman - hidden behind a light blue curtain - broke down in tears. "God is great. Oh, my Lord," she moaned, her voice electronically deepened and distorted. She strongly suggested she had been raped, but did not say so outright. When Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin asked her about the "assault," she said: "I was beaten up and tortured with electric shocks."
