Manaaki and Quarry see a parent arrive up on Top Flat and are excited & hopeful it is for them. Manaaki is quite vocal wheeing non stop and ends up climbing the hill in order to get a better look. After a couple of minutes, Manaaki returns to his but continues his wheeing. Then LKL walks down the hill and all four chicks have him in their sight! Left to right, NTF is on the hill, Quarry is just below her and in back of LKL, UQ is close to his nest and Manaaki rushes over. Quarry reaches out to beg her Dad for a feeding but Manaaki is right there begging too, LKL clacks and nips at His Royal Roundness who does not back down! NTF comes down the hill and Quarry & UQ are all wheeing and clacking as LKL is besiged by chicks! LKL even nips at his own chick in the mayhem. Manaaki finally retreats and turns around and ends up stumbling in a hole while trying to return to this nest. UQ is smart and kept his distance and NFT also runs back up the hill. LKL then leaves and heads to his nest and Quarry chick follows Dad where he will feed her. Whew! After feeding Quarry chick on her nest, LKL is seen walking back up the hill as he comes into view. UQ sees him first and starts wheeing and then Manaaki joins in. They both stay on their nest, LKL sits down briefly next to UQ who does not approach while Manaaki whees continually on his nest. LKL then walks over to Manaaki's nest and he sits down. Manaaki is smart and does not beg too close but continues to whee at him until LKL gets up to leave. When a parent arrives to feed their chick and other chicks insert themselves into the mix, the parent will most likely head to their nest along with the chick and that is where the feeding will take place. (This is what we saw today - Quarry chick followed her Dad back to her nest to get her feeding, LKL was not about to feed her in this setting). If a chick is not on their nest, they do run the risk of missing a feeding. Remember it is the goal of the parent to fly in to the colony for the sole purpose of feeding their chick and not anyone elses. Ranger Sharyn has stated "In the 85 years that the colony has been monitored, the feeding of someone else's chick has occurred once at this age. It is likely that when it does occur that the parents need to regurgitate their food the chick does not require any so they have found another chick. In total feeding another chick has been recorded only four times here. Three of the four are at the earlier post guard age."
