The Systematic Design Model was created by Robert M. Diamond. He was a professor of instructional design, development and evaluation and of higher education at Syracuse University in New York. The model of instructional development was created to be used by institutions of higher learning. It stresses sensitivity toward political and social issues on campus and within individual departments within the college/university. It focuses on individual classes, as well as complete curriculum. The model believes that Instructional Design must be completed as a team and must follow organizational priorities and missions. Now, here is the Systematic Design Model. As you can observe, it has two distinct phases: Project Selection and Design and Production, Implementation and Evaluation. During Phase 1, the feasibility and desirability of launching the project are examined. Instructional issues such as enrollment projections and level of existing courses as well as institutional priorities and faculty enthusiasm are all considered prior to beginning development. Diamond recommends beginning the process by thinking in terms of an ideal solution without regard to existing constraints. By thinking in ideal terms, a team will be more creative and innovative in outlining powerful solutions. Once a decision is made to begin a project, an operational plan is developed that accounts for the goals, timeline, human and other resources and student needs. During phase two of development, each unit of the course or curriculum proceeds through a seven-step process. The first step is to determine the objectives. This is followed by design of evaluation instruments and procedures, a step that proceeds concurrently with selecting the instructional format and examining existing materials for their possible inclusion in the system. Once these steps have been accomplished, any necessary new materials are produced and modifications are made to any materials that exists, but require modification. Field testing is also included as part of the same step. The next to the last step is coordinating logistics for implementation, followed by full scale implementation including evaluation and revision. Let us go to the advantages and disadvantages of the Systematic Design Model. For the advantages, the model creates curriculum that focuses on how students learn, as well as course content, continual assessments are used to see if the new curriculum is doing what it was designed to do and involves many different views (administration, faculty, and other stakeholders). However, project success depends on teamwork within a school’s faculty. So, this model will not work to a school with divided staff. Robert Diamond’s model was used to revise the biology curriculum at California State University. The project was started in 1995, and the first pilot classes were introduced in 2002. The Systematic Design Model emphasizes that developers should match decisions on whether to engage in instructional development to institutional missions as well as instructional issues. There is a need to assure faculty ownership of the results of the development effort, and the need for a formal organization to support faculty’s development efforts. That’s the end of our discussion. We hope that you have learned something today. Thank you very much. Till next time!!! Diamond, R. M. (1998).
