Rum has a captivating origin, with its roots in the Caribbean. It's made from sugarcane by-products, such as molasses and sugarcane juice, through a process of fermentation and distillation. The Caribbean Islands, in particular, have become renowned for their diverse range of rums. Historical records from the mid-seventeenth century show early rum production in Barbados, marking the beginning of this beloved spirit's journey. Rum is produced all over the world, but today, we'll be focusing on rums from English-speaking, French-speaking, and Spanish-speaking islands, and more! First up, we have the English-speaking island rums, known for their full-bodied and flavorful profiles, a legacy from the former British colonies. Examples of these rums are Appleton from Jamaica and Mount Gay from Barbados Next, we head to the French-speaking islands of Martinique and Haiti, known for producing medium-bodied rums made from sugar cane juice, called rhum agricole. These rums boast a unique herbal and vegetal profile, setting them apart from molasses-based rums. Julian Vernon: "Now, let's explore the Spanish-speaking islands, the Virgin Islands, and the Spanish Americas. They produce light-bodied rums that are 'continuous still' distilled and then aged in oak barrels. We have the Bacardi White and, and the iconic Havana Club from Cuba. And don't miss out on the Cruzan Estate Rum hailing from the US Virgin Islands. Rum offers an incredible diversity of flavors and styles. Let's take a quick tour through some of the most exciting variations! For those who love a burst of flavor, we have Captain Morgan Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Bacardi Limon, and Cruzan Mango, just to name a few. These flavored rums are perfect for creating tropical cocktails with a twist. Next, we have spiced rums like Captain Morgan Spiced, infused with delightful flavors and spices that elevate any mixed drink. For those who enjoy a richer, darker taste, there are rums like Coruba and Myers, aged in heavily charred oak barrels and enhanced with caramel for a distinct depth of flavor. If you're looking for a real punch, overproof rums like Wray & Nephew White Ovenproof and RumBar White Overproof are strong, high-proof rums that pack a serious punch in cocktails. Finally, we have sipping rums like Appleton Estate 21, and Flor de Cana 18 Years. These delicately aged rums are meant to be savored and enjoyed neat in a snifter glass. #rum #cocktail #mixology #bartender
