Merkala Beach (Plage Merkala) is one of Tangier’s most distinctive coastal spots, tucked away at the foot of the Marshan hills. Unlike the vast, open stretches of the main city beach, Merkala feels like a hidden cove right on the edge of the urban bustle. Here is why it’s a favorite for both locals and those "in the know": 1. The Vibe: Local and Scenic The "Cove of Jews": Historically known as Ensenada de los Judíos, this beach is smaller and more enclosed by rocky cliffs and mountains than the main bay. The Corniche Merkala: A beautiful, winding road and promenade lead you here from the Kasbah. It’s one of the best spots in the city for a scenic walk, offering views of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Spanish coastline on clear days. Quiet Retreat: While it can get busy on summer weekends, it generally feels more intimate and less "touristy" than the Municipal Beach. 2. What to Do There Sunset Watching: Because it sits to the west of the main port, it’s a prime location for watching the sun dip into the Atlantic/Mediterranean transition. Fishing: You’ll almost always see local fishermen perched on the rocks with their rods—it’s a very peaceful place to watch the tide come in. Strolling & Running: The paved path along the Merkala coast is a popular route for local joggers and families taking their evening paseo. 3. Practical Tips Swimming: While people do swim here, the water can sometimes be a bit "murky" or carry debris because of the way the bay catches ocean currents. For crystal-clear swimming, many locals prefer heading further out to Achakar or Dalia. Amenities: Facilities are more limited here than at the main beach. There are fewer cafes directly on the sand, but you are very close to the famous Café Hafa (about a 15-20 minute walk up the hill), where you can have a legendary mint tea overlooking the ocean. Access: You can reach it easily by taxi or by walking down the winding road from the Marshan neighborhood.
