(17 Apr 2007) SHOTLIST 1. US President George W Bush arriving at news conference 2. SOUNDBITE: (English) George W Bush, US President: "Our nation is shocked and saddened by the news of the shooting in Virginia Tech today. The exact toll hasn't yet been confirmed but it appears that more than thirty people were killed and many more were wounded." 3. Cutaway 4. SOUNDBITE: (English) George W Bush, US President: "I told them that Laura and many across our nation are praying for the victims and their families and all the members of the university community who have been devastated by this terrible tragedy. I told them that my administration will do everything possible to assist with the investigation and that our players stand ready to help, local law enforcement, and the local community, in any way we can during this time of sorrow. Schools should be places of safety, sanctuary and learning. When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom in every American community. Today our nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones at Virginia Tech. We hold the victims in our hearts, we lift them up in our prayers, and we ask a loving God to comfort those who are suffering today." 5. Bush leaving STORYLINE US President George W Bush on Monday afternoon offered condolences to the families and friends of those killed in a shooting at a Virginia college. Bush described the shootings as a "terrible tragedy" and said he and his wife were praying for the victims. "Our nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones at Virginia Tech," said Bush. A gunman opened fire in a dormitory and a classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday morning, killing at least 32 people, in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history. The gunman then killed himself, police said, bringing the death toll to 33. Students and a Virginia Tech employee said the first E-mail warning they got from the university came more than two hours after the first shots were fired - by which time the gunman had struck again. Fifteen people were in hospital being treated for injuries, said Virginia Tech President Charles Steger. "Schools should be places of safety, sanctuary and learning," President George W. Bush. "When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom in every American community."
