Dacoit Kusuma Nain, whose name spelled terror in the Chambal Valley in the 1980s and 1990s, has died at the age of 61. She was suffering from tuberculosis and was being treated at King George Medical University in Lucknow. Kusuma Nain's journey into the world of crime began after she was abducted by the Vikram Mallah gang on the prodding of her neighbour and lover, Madhav Mallah. Incidentally, Phoolan Devi was already in the Vikram Mallah gang. But Madhav Mallah could not guarantee what Kusuma had hoped for. While in the Vikram Mallah gang, Kusuma was treated like a slave and made to do all the cooking and laundary for the gang. When she was told to spy on Lalaram and Shriram, she ended up joining their gang. Then began her long list of crimes including kindappings, lootings and killings. On May 26, 1984, Kusuma led a massacre at Asta village located near the banks of river Yamuna. Thirteen people were shot dead, two were burnt alive and all the houses in the village were set on fire. The victims at Asta village were all from Phoolan Devi's community of Mallahs. It was seen as a revenge for the 1981 Behmai massacre carried out by Phoolan Devi's gang. Most of the 24 Behmai victims were Thakurs. In 1988, Kusuma fell out with Lalaram because he had abused her mother. She left Lalaram's gang and joined Fakkad Baba's gang of dacoits. More gruesome crimes followed on Kusuma's orders. The eyes of two men were gouged out to prevent them from giving testimony against Fakkad Baba's relatives. In January 1995, Kusuma abducted retired ADG Hardev Adarsh Sharma. Two months later, Sharma's body was found dumped in a canal. She had demanded ₹50 lakh ransom which was not paid. By 2004, the leader of her gang Fakkad Baba persuaded Kusuma to give up crime and surrender. She wanted to surrender before Mulayam Singh Yadav. He agreed but didn't show up on the day of surrender. Fakkad Baba and his entire gang including Kusuma Nain surrendred on June 8, 2004 in Bhind, Madhya Pradesh. During her 20 years in Etawah jail, she turned to spirituality and became a religious preacher.
