Good morning one and all, and welcome to the celebration of the Holy Mass on this Tuesday of the Fourth Week in Ordinary Time. Today's Holy Mass features the Blessing of Throats in honour and in memory of Saint Blaise, an Armenian bishop who suffered martyrdom in the early 4th century. According to legend, Saint Blaise was an excellent physician and was said to be a man of great faith and virtue, caring for his people in both body and soul. He is reported to have been arrested during the persecution of Licinius. While on his way to jail, the legend continues that he miraculously cured a boy who was choking on a fish bone. Another story relates, that on that same journey, a woman begged him to save her pig that had been seized by a wolf. Bishop Blaise ordered the wolf to release the pig and the wolf obeyed. In gratitiude, the woman brought two wax candles to light his prison cell; the reason why today, two wax candles are used in the Blessing of Throats. The Responsorial Psalm is Psalm 86: "Listen, Lord, and answer me."
