Cats and Dogs—Can They Be Friends? Waffles came to us less socialized than most kittens I rescue. He was more anxious, which was understandable for a single kitten trying to survive on his own. He was insecure and acted tough to protect himself from any "danger" he might perceive. He would puff up and hiss before another animal could even get close, but it was all for show. With slow, planned integration, he was able to relax and trust the other four cats. I could almost see him take a big sigh of relief as he let go of his defensive posture. Beneath that arched back and bottle-brush tail was an incredibly sweet and playful kitten. Instead of crabbing, he now "popcorns"—a very playful behavior. He cuddles with everyone, including Papa G. However, he was still scared of the dogs. Even after quarantine, he couldn’t meet Phoebe face-to-face. When Waffles hissed at Phoebe, she understood and kept her distance, even though it bothers her when kittens don't like her. My job was to coach Phoebe so she wouldn’t scare Waffles, allowing him to gain confidence around her. It took many weeks of controlled interactions, but I could see Waffles getting more comfortable. What really helped was counter-conditioning—having Waffles approach Phoebe while she stayed still, followed by rewarding them both. It was important that Phoebe didn’t interact with him until he was ready. She did an amazing job following my lead. It’s still a work in progress, but I now feel comfortable letting them be in the same room unsupervised. Watch more integration videos: • Cat Condo in the Flat
