Job training for inmates to prevent recidivism? And at no additional taxpayer expense? Yes! A substantial part of the Benton County Jail population are repeat offenders. If you have enough conversations with former inmates and people who work with this segment of our community, you learn that joblessness after incarceration is a major cause for repeat offenses. It is a major expense to taxpayers to continue to ignore this issue. As someone who started her career with a trade school education, I believe in training to build a skilled labor workforce. Every local company who depends on skilled trades feels the pinch of a tight labor market. Training inmates for the specific needs of our local employers addresses two problems: the demand for skilled labor and the need for dependable jobs that pay the high cost of life upon release from jail — plus these trades offer a good wage and provide a work environment eight to twelve hours a day that becomes a new community for the former inmate rebuilding his or her life after incarceration. That solves a third problem that contributes to recidivism — having no relationships outside the group they got in trouble with. This video covers my proposed solution that does not require additional county taxpayer money. This started as an idea and has grown into a plan we can execute once I’m elected. I put this idea in front of people who gave me hard feedback, and I asked for their ideas in solving the problem. This solution is a beginning of a collaborative effort that spans the network of people connected to the inmate community — family, friends, transitional living facilities, jail chaplains, specialty courts, probation officers, landlords, and more. There are exciting innovation happening in the transitional living community as well. Can this happen if I’m not elected to be your Benton County Judge? Maybe … but having a top-level elected official at the table who has demonstrated concern for solving the complex issue of recidivism matters. Experience and institutional knowledge matters in solving our jail overcrowding issue. You can trust me to deliver solutions as your next county judge.
