The Mumbai Central–Valsad Fast Passenger train, designated as 09023/09024, has a rich history, particularly noted for its non-AC double-decker coaches. These coaches were introduced in the 1970s to accommodate the increasing number of commuters between Mumbai and Valsad. The Western Railway (WR), formerly known as the Bombay, Baroda, and Central India Railway (BB&CI), was a pioneer in operating double-decker coaches, with the earliest versions dating back to the 1860s. As of January 4, 2025, these iconic non-AC double-decker coaches have been retired from service due to the expiration of their codal life. The final run occurred on January 4, 2025, marking the end of an era in Mumbai’s railway history. In their place, the train will now operate with conventional ICF rakes, starting January 5, 2025. The new configuration includes a 22-coach ICF rake, designed to offer a similar passenger capacity through a combination of regular seating and upper berths. To honor the legacy of these double-decker coaches, Western Railway is exploring the idea of converting the retired coaches into “restaurants on wheels,” providing a unique dining experience while preserving a piece of Mumbai’s railway heritage. The Mumbai Central–Valsad Fast Passenger train continues to serve daily commuters between Mumbai Central and Valsad, maintaining its significance in the region’s rail network.
