Michael East (1580-1648)-You meaner beauties of the night with The Consort of Musicke Madrigal and Instrumental Ensemble directed by Anthony Rooley from 'Madrigal and Wedding Songs for Diana' Recorded in April 1981 Also on 'Emma Kirkby-Collection' East published this song in his sixth book and requires an unusual combination of solo voice, four viols and chorus. It is incribed 'An Aire of a Canzo composed in honour of the most illustrious Princesse, Th eLady Elisabeth´ and is presumed to have been written for her marriage to Frederick the Fifth, Count Pálatine of the Rhine. By the time East published this piece in 1624, the queen of Bohemia(usually known as The Winter Queen) had met with extreme difficulties, and the German Thirty years War had begun. 'You meaner beauties of the night Which poorly satisfy men's eyes More with your number than your light; you common people of the skies, What are you when woon doth rise? You violets, which first appar By tose yor purple mantle known, Much like proud virgins of the year, As if the Spring wete all your own; What are you when roses blown? You wandering chanters of the wood Who fill the ears with Nature's lays, Thinking your passion understood By the weaker accents; what's your praise When Philomel her voice doth rise? So when my Princess shall been seen I Sweetness of her looks and mind By the Virtue first, then choice a Queen; o tell if she were not designed Th'eclipse and glory of her kind?
