Grounded theory in qualitative research – intro to classical grounded theory Barney Glaser

Grounded theory in qualitative research begins with Barney Glaser’s classical approach. Everything that came afterwards is built from it! Grounded theory is a popular research approach among qualitative social scientists. It builds theories from the ground up, based on actual data from the social world. Unlike traditional methods that start with an existing theory, grounded theory flips the script by developing theories inductively from real-life observations. In this video, we'll explore the core principles of grounded theory, focusing on the classical approach pioneered by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss. Grounded theory is like assembling a puzzle without knowing the final picture—you gather data pieces first and then build the bigger qualitative picture from there. We’ll go through some of the key features of classical grounded theory including constant comparison, theoretical sampling and open coding. We’ll also consider the role of the researcher in classical grounded theory – because this is significantly different from the researcher role in other types of grounded theory. If you're curious about grounded theory and its qualitative applications, this video is a great starting point. While I simplify some concepts to help beginners, the comments section is open for deeper discussion and insights, so feel free to drop your thoughts and questions in there. And if you want more videos on grounded theory, the interpretivist and constructivist approaches, comment “More!”.
