I'm 77 years old. My name is Officer William Thompson. In 1965, I became the first Black police officer in Riverside, Ohio - a city of 85,000 people that had never seen a Black man in uniform carrying a gun and the authority to use it. They said it would never work. The community wouldn't respect me. The other officers wouldn't accept me. A Black man couldn't maintain law and order in a city that was 78% white. They were right about some things and wrong about others. But I wore that badge for 32 years anyway. This is my story of walking into a police station with 38 white officers and being the only Black face. Of arresting both Black and white suspects and being criticized by both communities. Of solving the Tommy Morrison case that proved Black neighborhoods deserved equal protection. Of building trust one call at a time. I wasn't just policing the community - I was defending myself against my own colleagues. I wasn't just a police officer - I was a bridge between two worlds that didn't trust each other. From rookie cop to detective to captain, this is what it really took to change a system from the inside. — Officer William "Bill" Thompson, Riverside PD (Retired) 👇 HAVE A STORY ABOUT BREAKING BARRIERS?
