In this video essay I start by explaining the importance of precision when talking about genre, relaying a true example that I experienced with the FPS genre. Then I explore five prime examples of what I feel is an Unknown Genre in games. These titles, and others, tend to get lumped into adjacent unrelated genres. But after you've played several of them, you start to feel a distinct similarity, that transcends classifications like stealth, survival horror, overhead shooter, movie tie-in, etc. There is a specific cognitive sensation, or qualia, uniting these games. I've always had trouble explaining it to others, so i hope this video shows what I mean. Jagur 5, Metal Gear 2, Die Hard (NES), Alien 3 (GB), and Resident Evil: Gaiden, all produce the same very specific "feeling" during play, based on certain shared mechanics. We need to be more precise with our nomenclature, so it's easier to find more games exactly like these. My book series can be found on Amazon, here is the latest volume: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Untold-Histo... There are well over 120 interviews with developers across the four books. (Volumes 1, 2, 3 and 5 are books; "Episode IV" is the out of print DVD / Bluray.
