If you can see a wind turbine or communications mast from a couple yards away you can be pretty sure you're on top of the world! This road goes from Rio Caldo to Lima Escape and is about as far as you can get off the 'beaten track' whilst still remaining a tarmac 'hard surface'. It winds over the steep hills at the edge of the remote Peneda-Gerês National Park. A fantastically remote piece of road winding over the 'top of (far west) Europe. The old Land Rover had to work hard on some nasty climbs and low-range was liberally employed on the downhill sections as well... It is a great place to explore and you easily could spend a week in the area. Rio Caldo is an interesting village on the banks of a wide section of the Cavado river with many bars and cafés where I imagine hiking and watersports are on the menu. The road leading out to the north traverses wild forests and then climbs out above the tree line to endless vistas with nothing but ferns, grass and rocks for company...
