Rust Prayer began as a physical thing: a cassette made by hand, recorded in real time. This digital version is a translation, not a cleanup. The tape was a family collaboration of sorts. My daughter chose some songs and audio fragments. The opening audio clip is a bizarre voice recording my brother sent me without explanation. It sets the tone unintentionally, which makes it perfect. Side A is blunt force. Anger with its teeth still in. It moves like a body bracing for impact, all pressure and refusal. Side B is fractured. Harrowing, dissonant, off-kilter rhythms that don’t resolve so much as wander into darker rooms. This side leans into unease, into the sound of things slipping just out of alignment. The audio fragments are from various reels on social media and were manually manipulated. The final NIN track on the tape was distorted by physically altering the tape speed during recording. This song already has the sound of dying tape so, I just added a little extra for good measure.
