An unscripted, off the cuff after action report on my recent Steam AK420 build. I tried to highlight some moments in the manual that led to confusion and a balanced view of my overall thoughts, both the good and the bad. I hope you got some value added if you're going through an AK420 build. About this AK420: I got mine on HeliDirect during a 15% sale, so the cost at the time was $212. Likewise, I also got the avionics on a sale. I did splurge on the motor and got an Egodrift so cost was $640 for everything. I could have shaved about $90 off the total price and gone for a Steam brand motor, which I hear are great for their price point. This machine makes a perfect package of size to price. It's an excellent 1st helicopter and for sure a perfect upgrade if you're stepping up from micro helicopters and still don't feel confidant about a higher tier brand and its related costs. With the AK420 you're not getting a top shelf bird, but you are 100% getting a bang for the buck that won't break your wallet if you mangle it. Just look at the parts list online and see for yourself how cheap it is to recover in the event of a crash. It's a perfect trainer. The build itself had its moments of frustration, but wasn't something that couldn't be overcome with some head scratching. Hopefully my highlights of moments that left me hanging are clear enough for you to get through when you come to them. Bottom line, are the better kits out there for a first time build? Yes. Is this still a feasible kit for a first time builder? Yes I give my approval of this kit. There were some dirty moments filled with expletives, but overall it accomplishes exactly what it's supposed too. Cheap to crash 400 class bird. A perfect gateway into medium-sized craft and up.
