Back buttering tiles during the installation process may not always be needed for most subway tiles in this video I explain why certain subway tiles, or small format tiles can be installed without back buttering and when in some cases it may be needed. For large format tiles, and for natural stone tiles, back buttering the tiles with thinset, is always recommended, however for smaller tiles, usually 12" or less it may not be needed to achieve the recommended thinset mortar coverage on the back of the tile when it is set. When a tile is back buttered with thinset it makes it easier to achieve the recommended coverage of thinset when the tile is placed into the combed bed of thinset. It is always desirable to achieve as close to 100% coverage of thinset as possible, back buttering the tile facilitates this goal.
