Since we had been traveling continuously for several days, we woke up slightly late on 24th December and then started exploring Diu. Our first destination in Diu was the beautiful and historic ⛪ St. Paul’s Church 📜 Portuguese Colonial History in India (Short Brief) The Portuguese were among the first European powers to arrive in India for trade and later established colonial settlements along the western coast. Their presence in India began in 1498, when the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama reached Calicut by sea route. Over time, the Portuguese established several colonies in India including: Goa Diu Daman Dadra Nagar Haveli Even after Indian Independence, these territories remained under Portuguese rule for several years. Finally, in 1961, these regions were integrated into India through Annexation of Goa, which ended Portuguese colonial rule in the country. Because of this long Portuguese presence, places like Diu still reflect strong European influence in their churches, forts, architecture and culture, including the beautiful St. Paul’s Church. This church is one of the most famous and architecturally stunning churches in India and is known for its magnificent Baroque architecture built during Portuguese rule.
