Quarantining Aquatic Pet Invertebrates

Things I forgot to mention: You'll notice a "Tradewinds" tea plastic container in the video. I find it helpful to leave water sit overnight in plastic jugs so that the water becomes room temperature so there's no guess work in getting the water temperature right for your pets. Letting water sit 24hrs in an open top container also allows the chlorine in the water to naturally evaporate out, but you should still use a tap water conditioner because it'll get ride of hard metals in the water, and help keep aquatic pets' slime coat healthy. The color of some pets' feces is impacted by the color and type of food they're fed so unusual colored feces may not be any need for concern. For example undigested parts of bloodworms will show up in feces as red streaks/dots and my ghost shrimps' feces were bright red when fed red flake food but were dark when given dark colored goldfish flakes. Monitor the pet closely for change in behavior or appetite and change the color/type of food temporarily to make sure there is no health issue. Pets that were kept together prior to you buying them from the breeder can be quarantined together, because if one has parasites or is ill all are likely already infected since they were raised together and likely shipped together in the same container. However, many aquatic invertebrates (such as shrimps) will become highly territorial and kill each other if kept together in too confined of a space. This method also makes a great hospital/medical tank for aquatic pets that need to be treated with medication, need close monitoring, and/or need separated from tank mates because of an injury. Also, great for spawning/breeding, keeping fertilized females, and raising tiny young. Newly purchases live aquatic plants should also be quarantined for a month in a separate tank (or just a plastic container works well for plants) before being placed in your existing aquariums in case there were any sick animals kept with the plants prior to purchase. For saltwater setups the quarantine aquarium needs to be setup with salt and the salinity measured everyday until the salinity remains constant at the correct reading for at least a week before any pets are added to the tank. An over head desk lamp or under the tank heat pad (human, reptile, betta, or hermit crab kind are all fine) can be used to supply heat. Measure the temperature constantly until you get the right temperature and can keep it stable before adding any pets. Change heat pad setting, tank distance from the heat source (can raise tank on bricks or wood planks to keep it directly off a heat pad), and bulb wattage to achieve the correct stable water temperature. Don't keep light on your pets 24/7 as this will cause stress without some time in the darkness. Temperature can be allowed to drop slightly at night.
