Parkland father feels pain for Texas parents

(25 May 2022) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ++SOUNDBITES SEPARATED BY BLACK++ POOL Fort Lauderdale, Florida - 25 May 2022 ++STARTS ON SOUNDBITE++ 1. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Hoyer, Father of Parkland shooting victim: "I'm in physical pain for what they what they're going through right now. It's, there are no words, no words. So sorry it happened to them." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Hoyer, Father of Parkland shooting victim: "I know what the families had to endure sitting in a room waiting to hear that their child is laying in a school on a floor. It's heartbreaking, just heartbreaking." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 3. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Hoyer, Father of Parkland shooting victim: "I think the only thing you could say is, you know, to that community, you know, support those families. Just show up, don't have to say anything, just show up. Show up to the vigils. Show up to the funerals. Show up for them and just be there for them. You know, it's such a terrible thing. I think it's for me anyway, it was very helpful to know that the community was there to support us through all of this." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Hoyer, Father of Parkland shooting victim: "I just think it's even more surreal that those families are starting this terrible journey and we might be getting closer to the end of ours. And I hope their journey through all of this is a lot faster than ours." ++BLACK FRAMES++ 5. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom Hoyer, Father of Parkland shooting victim: "Feels like the safety of people in schools and churches, while talked about, may fall down the priority list a little bit. And there are a lot of other really important things going on in the world right now. But it does feel a little bit like this has kind of fallen down the list of a thing that is happening. And people are, for lack of a better way of putting it, getting used to it. And, you know, I'm not going to give up. My wife is not going to give up. The families from Parkland are not going to give up. There's a lot of other families in these other shootings that are doing things. You know, we're going to keep pushing and there is going to be change. There will be improvement. I'm optimistic that at some point somebody's going to have to do something about this because these things when they happen are just so horrific. And people have to find a way to prevent these things. And I think enough of these will happen that we'll get there." ++ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++ STORYLINE: A man whose 15-year-old son was killed in the 2018 school massacre in Parkland, Florida, said Wednesday that he's in physical pain thinking of what parents of children killed at a Texas elementary school are going through. "I know what those families had to endure sitting in a room waiting to hear that their child is laying in a school on a floor. It is heartbreaking, heartbreaking," Tom Hoyer said as he stood outside the courtroom in Fort Lauderdale where jury selection for the penalty trial for the murderer, Nikolas Cruz, is underway. "I hope their journey through all of this is a lot faster than ours," Hoyer said as his voice broke and his knees shook. His son Luke was among 14 students and three staff members killed on Valentine's Day 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Cruz, now 23, pleaded guilty in October to 17 counts of first-degree murder and to the wounding of 17 others. The trial will decide whether Cruz is sentenced to death or life in prison without parole. On Wednesday morning, the Texas shooting was discussed by the lawyers. =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter:   / ap_archive   Facebook:   / aparchives    Instagram:   / apnews   You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
