🍉Did you know research shows perineal massage starting at 34 WEEKS can help reduce the risk of perineal tearing during delivery! 🍉 START at 34 weeks of pregnancy. Perform once a day, every other day, or every 2-4 days for at least 1-3 min or 3-5 min and up to 8-10 min! Everyone’s frequency and duration will differ depending on their body and situation (More doesn’t equal better!) so if you are unsure about specifics TALK to your doctor, physical therapist, doula, and/or midwife👩⚕️ 🍉Here is my condensed step-by-step guide for MASTERING perineal massage: 🍉FREE complete GUIDE for download on my WEBSITE with perineal massage videos: https://the-belly-whisperer.teachable... 1️⃣Preparation🍉 🍉-Wash your hands or use latex free medical gloves, trim fingernails, bring a mirror, unscented oil (ie. coconut oil) and find a comfortable and private area. Take a warm bath or shower before. 2️⃣Position🍉 🍉-Recline slightly backwards and prop up your back with pillows on a chair, bed, sofa or against a wall with legs open wide and knees bent. 3️⃣Lubrication🍉 🍉-Place oil or lubricant on thumbs as well as on the lower part of the vaginal opening and perineum. 5️⃣Massage🍉 🍉-Warm-up by rubbing the OUTSIDE of the vaginal opening along the labia majora/minora to prepare for massage INSIDE the vaginal opening 🍉-Place your thumb about 2-4cm (to 1st knuckle) just on the inside the lower portion of the vagina opening at 6 o’clock above the perineum 🍉-Gently press downwards toward your anus for about 10-15 seconds until you are used to the pressure (NO PAIN) and then aim for holding at least 30 seconds to up to 2 min. 🍉-Then massage using your thumbs upwards and outwards then back again in a U-shaped movement starting at 6 o’clock and moving to 3 and 9 o’clock. (Remember to use slow, deep breathing during the massage) 6️⃣Partner Play🍉 🍉-Massage can be difficult during the later stages of pregnancy so involve your partner!
