This is a visual collage of the magnificent beauty of two Spanish hill towns, Albarracin and Cuenca. Perched in the rugged hills of Aragón, and 168 miles east of Madrid, Albarracín boasts a rich and layered history that stretches from prehistoric settlements to medieval independence. Albarracín endured fierce fighting during the Spanish Civil War, but its cultural legacy prevailed, earning it National Monument status in 1961. Cuenca traces its origins to a strategic Moorish fortress called Kunka, built in the 8th century between the Júcar and Huécar river gorges. During the Middle Ages, Cuenca flourished as a textile and livestock center, and its Gothic cathedral—one of Spain’s earliest—was constructed. Though it suffered decline in the 18th and 19th centuries, the city’s dramatic setting and preserved medieval architecture earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1996.
