The Kubernetes Operator is a design pattern that was initially developed by the team at CoreOS and can be thought of as an application-specific controller that runs within a Kubenetes cluster. The Postgres Operator from Crunchy Data centers around managing and deploying the Postgres database within a Kubernetes cluster. The Operator runs as a Deployment and creates three Kubernetes Third Party Resources: pg-backup, pg-database, and pg-cluster when it starts. The initial release allows for the creation of databases, database clusters, backup jobs, and also restoring a database. Future release of the Operator will provide more advanced features such as upgrading and failover. In this video, Jeff McCormick walks through Crunchy Data's initial implementation of the PostgreSQL Operator by demonstrating specific functionality including: How Kubernetes Third Party Resources cause the Postgres Operator to perform actions like creating a database or deleting a database.
