Lucerne the capital of Switzerland is seen as the starting point of the Gotthard railway. When it was put into operation in 1882, Austria already had its Semmering and Brenner railroad and linked the Mont Ceni tunnel France with Italy. The Gotthard railway runs along the site which gave the country its name, Schwyz. It is the first continuous mountain railway line from Switzerland. The Gotthard railway connects Immensee (Canton of Schwyz) with Chiasso in the canton of Ticino and crosses the Gotthard massif via the 15 km long Gotthard tunnel. In 2016 the new Gotthard base tunnel was opened.
