By building these immersive soundscapes, I wanted to reflect on our fragile position in the cosmos—insignificant, yet capable of immense destruction or profound creation. I wanted to explore the relentless passage of time and the tension between our potential to build a better world or exploit each other and nature. There’s a sense of urgency, a race to live, which contrasts with the idea of a necessary slowdown. I spent the past year rushing from project to project, feeling this urgency as I built my music, my work environment, and the conditions to sustain it. Yet deep down, I know I should slow down, observe, be vulnerable, and connect with others. "Courage does not lie in invincibility but in accepting our imperfections and vulnerability. In the spirit of optimistic nihilism, embracing the absurdity and fragility of our human condition becomes an invitation to create meaning together—not through a quest for power or domination, but through solidarity and cooperation." For sound design, I used Bubbler by SoundHack—one of my favorite tools. (I actually made an explanation about it for Fastlane, an Ableton music school—it’s on YouTube.) For the cello, we used Paolo’s technique of placing clothes pegs on the strings to create a noisier, more textured sound. (If you look at Paolo’s cello during our live performances, you’ll see them attached.) The drums are a mix of different elements: samples, DFAM synth, and many processed sounds through Bubbler. I often use wood chop sounds to give the drums a more organic feel. Another favorite technique of mine: every sound is "pulsing" because I apply LFOs to volume and effects, making the different elements interact dynamically. Sebastien Veyan : Sabi explores the ever-evolving landscapes that define the journey of Optimistic Nihilism. The scene opens with deep, dark rock formations—both a metaphor and a representation of human isolation in time. They remind us that we are mere specks of dust in the grand scheme of the universe, not the authors of a story greater than ourselves. This rich and detailed environment mirrors the emptiness of this realization, keeping our focus on our immediate surroundings rather than the vast unknown. Then, the rocks begin to swirl, and the space lights up with an ethereal glow. In that moment, we choose to give meaning to this place: if we are insignificant in the larger universe, then we must strive to make this fleeting moment meaningful in itself. The atmosphere brightens, expanding our perception and imbuing everything within reach with significance. A central rock becomes our anchor, a familiar ground for this newfound perspective. Surrounding it, defined rock formations emerge, creating a sense of stability through connection. New organic forms sprout, reinforcing this evolving concept—shifting us away from isolation in time and toward the act of curating our own small corner of the vastness, in line with optimistic nihilism. The scene closes as we return to the original rock formations, now infused with an abstract evolution. Our perspective has shifted: from isolation in the universe to an embrace of the immediate connections around us, regardless of their permanence in time.
