Last game, Phoenix didn’t seem to show any lapse in concentration. They obliterated FAU by a score of 66-10, marking their best defensive performance and largest margin of victory of the year. The Owls’ offense just wasn’t capable of keeping up with the Firehawks. That being said, while the defense only gave up 10 points and racked up 7 sacks, they did another 300+ yard performance through the air. Whether that is part of DC Lemieux’s strategy to bend but not break against a team that was fighting from behind the entire game, or the secondary just isn’t capable of what their talent says they should be to this point is unknown. What is known is that if the latter reason is true, they should be shaking in their boots this week as they hit the road to battle against the #6 Tennessee Volunteers (3-0). Phoenix has never had an easy time against defending the Veer and Shoot offense regardless of the team, but if this defense is already proving to be leaky, then there could be plenty of fireworks. Every game that Phoenix has played against Tennessee has ended with both teams scoring in bundles. The only saving grace for the Firehawks is that the Volunteers have lost many key components of those dynamic offenses, particularly at quarterback. Quarterback has been an interesting position for Tennessee this year. Their starter, Carl Joesph, was injured after the 1st game of the season after he threw for 100 yards, 1 TD, and 0 INTs in the first half and they had to turn to the backup, Khalil Judovsky. He is considered a below average quarterback, but he threw for 800 yards, 14 TDs, and 0 INTs in three games, including 5 TDs in last week’s win at #3 TCU. Fortunately for Tennessee, they’ve had a strong run game to supplement their passing offense, led by HB Peyton Lewis, who is averaging 90 yards and 1 TD per game. They are averaging over 450 yards a game for the season. Speaking of offense, Deonte O’Neal is on the brink of offensive history. He is currently tied for the third-most TD passes in a career with 155 (behind former Alabama QB George Saldiveri and former Auburn QB/current Phoenix head coach Aiden Blaze). If he were to throw one more, he would cement himself as one of the greatest passers of all time. Not bad for a former one star recruit with dreams of becoming like Lamar Jackson that Head Coach Aiden Blaze saw potential in. In a season fraught with history, let’s not forget to appreciate Heisman winner and history-maker Deonte O’Neal.
