Haunted Church Hill Tunnel: Deadly Tragedy of 1925 (Raft Exploration)

Come along today as we explore a spooky abandoned underground railway tunnel in Richmond Virginia. From the fatal history to the creepy white mist that moved toward me at the end of the explore, this is a haunting place. It is even said to be the lair of the Richmond vampire. If I have ever explored a haunted place, this is it. The Church Hill tunnel of Richmond, Virginia withholds some of the most tragic early railroading history in Virginia. Completed in 1873, several people died from collapses during the initial years of construction. In 1901 the tunnel was temporarily abandoned upon the completion of the viaduct. In an attempt to repair the tunnel and make it fully operational in 1925, a large portion of the tunnel collapsed on 200 workers and ten flat freight cars. One body was recovered while a fireman later died at a local hospital. The last body was recovered October 10, than all rescue efforts were permanently halted to prevent further loss of life. Two bodies and the railway cars have never been recovered. The Chesapeake and Ohio railway who built the tunnel was used to blasting through solid bedrock. The area of Richmond consists of unstable clay. The tunnel extends 4,000 feet beneath the Church Hill district of Richmond, Virginia. Much of the tunnel is likely collapsed. The tunnel continues to collapse, even in the modern era, causing sinkholes. This has damaged houses, a church, and a tennis court. In 2006, the Virginia Historic Society investigated recovering the train and bodies. The men were to be given a proper burial and the train was to be preserved. A hole was drilled and a camera entered into the hidden cavity of the tunnel. It found that the tunnel was filled with silt and water, and further investigations could result in further collapses and hazards. The investigation has been on hold ever sense.
