Hughes Mountain, near Irondale, Missouri, is one of those rare geological gems that never photographs the same way twice. This rugged rhyolite formation, often called the “Devil’s Honeycomb,” is made up of ancient volcanic rock—some of the oldest exposed stone in Missouri. On this particular evening, the weather kept us on our toes. The skies shifted from thick clouds to brilliant sunshine and then quickly turned overcast again. These rapidly changing conditions made it a perfect teaching opportunity. To handle the extreme contrast between the glowing sunset and the shadowed rock foreground, we used **exposure to the right (ETTR)**—pushing the histogram as far right as possible without clipping highlights—to capture maximum detail and minimize noise. Later, we combined multiple focus points through **focus stacking**, ensuring sharpness from the lichen-covered foreground all the way to the distant tree line. The result is a balanced, detailed landscape that captures both the texture of the stone and the fleeting light of the setting sun. Photography days like this remind us that patience and adaptability are just as important as technical skill.
