Ayer & Son, Inc. as part of the Bell Science Series, “The Alphabet Conspiracy” (1959) is a color educational film that explores the science of linguistics. Narrated by Dr. Frank C. Baxter, the film follows a young girl named Judy (Cheryl Callaway), who, overwhelmed by her English homework, dreams of a whimsical yet unsettling conspiracy led by the Mad Hatter (Hans Conried) and the Jabberwock (Dolores Starr) to abolish the alphabet. Blending live action, animation, and scientific explanations, the film delves into the origins of language, phonetics, and alternative communication systems. 00:00 Bell Telephone Co. seal (0:08). Dr. Baxter walks along sidewalk of residential suburban neighborhood (0:18). Opening credits (1:27). Girl named Judy sits at desk in study filled with books, complains about doing English homework (2:26). Set transitions to playful, larger than life version of study, Judy now in miniature form sees letters dance across page of book (2:51). Judy joins letters in dancing (3:49). Mad Hatter appears from behind book and introduces himself to Judy, another character Jabberwock also appears (4:14). Judy attempts to dance with letters and lead them into a trap, Mad Hatter and Jabberwock wait with mallets (5:31). Dr. Baxter introduces himself to the different characters, challenges their perception of letters and the alphabet (5:37). Animation of tree growing across land mass on globe, representing the spread of speech and languages throughout time (7:53). Similar animation showing the spread of “Romance Languages” - branch of tree spreads from Italy across Mediterranean to Spain and Portugal before spreading West to France and East to Romania, and North to Germany (8:34). Animation of little boys swinging from tree branches appear - each say word “Dad” in their respective language, emphasizing similarities in Romance languages (8:53). Montage clips of different babies in cribs, strollers, just born in hospital, swimming with mother etc. emphasizing similarities of baby babble cross cultures and regions, all babies start with same sounds (9:31). Mad Hatter explains to Dr. Baxter and other characters why he hopes to do away with the alphabet (10:57).
