Rattail fish are very curious and will investigate any disturbance on or around the seafloor. In addition to their large eyes adapted to detect bioluminescent prey, rattails (Macrouridae) can also sense a variety of other food sources using sensory structures on their heads. They communicate with a swim bladder which makes a drumming sound. Rattail fish are caught and sold under the more palatable name, "grenadier." The Seafood Watch recommendations for giant rattail grenadier caught on the U.S. West Coast with bottom trawls or set longlines is a "Good Alternative", although little is known about the status of this deepwater, long-lived species. These fish grow very slowly and may not reproduce until they are 30 or 40 years old.⠀ Video editor: Ted Blanco Writer: Linda Kuhnz Production team: Nancy Barr, Nancy Jacobsen Stout, Heidi Cullen Learn more about the Seafood Watch recommendations for this and other deep-sea fish: https://www.seafoodwatch.org/seafood-...
