The 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake caused significant damage to the city of Kobe, but it also provided an opportunity for urban reconstruction. After over a decade of post-disaster rebuilding, Kobe is now more modern and stylish compared to other cities in Japan. Compared to the crowds in Osaka, Kobe's commercial area is cleaner and more comfortable, and the European-style architecture of the former foreign settlement enhances the shopping and sightseeing experience. Nankinmachi Chinatown, one of Japan's three major Chinatowns, attracts long lines of locals for its various delicious foods. The walking route includes two major shopping streets in Kobe: Sannomiya Center Street and Motomachi Shopping Street, along with the former foreign settlement and the Chinese district of Nankinmachi. After dark, head to the Kobe Port area to enjoy the dazzling lights of the Kobe Tower and the Mosaic Ferris Wheel.
