This piece was inspired by my experience witnessing the Perseid meteor shower while attending the Aspen Music Festival. My friends and I had the privilege of viewing the Perseids from a mountain top unobstructed by manmade light pollution. I will never forget the humbling experience of viewing this cosmic event. The opening theme is set with spacious natural harmonics, that represent the slow prelude to one of the Cosmos’ most brilliant displays. Just as the Perseids begin slowly and gradually gain momentum, so too does the music. The piece eventually culminates with the return of the natural harmonics accompanied by left hand trills that represent the streaks left in the sky by the meteorites. Perseus is one of 48 ancient constellations listed by the second-century astronomer Ptolemy. In Greek mythology, Perseus is the legendary founder of Mycenae and of the Perseid dynasty. This Greek demigod is best known for beheading the Gorgon Medusa and saving his wife Andromeda from the sea monster Cetus. Perseus was the son of Zeus and the mortal Danaë, as well as the half-brother and great-grandfather of Heracles. The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle. The meteors are called the Perseids because the point from which they originate (the radiant) lies in the constellation Perseus. The meteor cloud consists of particles ejected by Swift-Tuttle as it travels on its 133-year orbit. The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity between August 9th-14th.
