Today, we will explore three renowned and stunning attractions: the Citadel of Qaitbay, the Alexandria Lighthouse, and the Museum of Mummified Fish. Additionally, we will experience the breathtaking beauty of the Mediterranean Sea. These attractions are conveniently located near the main town and can be accessed by public bus, Uber, or even a horse cart. ________________________________________ The Mediterranean Sea offers a mesmerizing experience with the soothing sound of waves. Cats are a common sight in Egypt, as they were considered sacred in ancient times. They played a significant role in Egyptian culture, were mummified, and featured in hieroglyphs. While heading to the Citadel of Qaitbay, you will come across boat trips on the Mediterranean Sea, which take visitors to the site of the historic Alexandria Lighthouse. The boat ride also provides a spectacular view of the Citadel from the sea. However, be cautious of scams by local boat operators. Initially, the boatman may charge 100 Egyptian pounds, but at the end of the trip, they might demand 200 Egyptian pounds. The Lighthouse of Alexandria is located at the entrance of the Eastern Harbor on the eastern point of Pharos Island. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The lighthouse, also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, once stood at 130 meters (430 feet) and was the tallest man-made structure of its time. During the day, a mirror reflected sunlight to guide ships, while at night, a fire was lit to serve as a beacon. The lighthouse was built under the reign of Ptolemy II between 280 and 247 BC, using black stone. Its design was divided into three sections: a square base, an octagonal middle section, and a cylindrical top with a spiral staircase leading to the light source. It was dedicated to the sea god Proteus and played a crucial role in guiding ships into the busy harbor of Alexandria. Visiting the museum requires special permission and costs 500 Egyptian pounds per person. ________________________________________ Museum of Mummified Fish in Alexandria The Qaitbay Maritime Museum showcase the treasures of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. Located near the Qaitbay Fort, the Alexandria Aquarium was established in 1930 and features marine life from the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Nile, and even the Amazon. The collection includes fish, crustaceans, turtles, coral reefs, and fossils. The Qaitbay Maritime Museum, situated inside the Citadel of Qaitbay, displays mummified sea creatures, rare fish, sea sponges, and an impressive whale skeleton. __________________________ The Citadel of Qaitbay Was built between 1477 and 1479 AD (882–884 AH) by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qa'it Bay. The Citadel continued to serve as a military stronghold during the Mamluk and Ottoman periods. Today, it is a popular tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The interior of the fortress includes a mosque, a palace, and several other buildings. A replica of the Citadel of Qaitbay is displayed within the complex. To protect the site from the powerful waves of the Mediterranean, a dam was constructed. The fortress, which took 20 years to complete, was strategically designed with high towers, winding corridors, and multiple defensive structures. Built 547 years ago, it stands as a timeless symbol of Islamic civilization and the rich history of the Mediterranean region. The Citadel of Qaitbay is square in shape, measuring 150 meters in length and 130 meters in width. The fortress consists of three floors, with high towers, corridors, and rooms that offered protection from invaders. The design of the Citadel reflects both beauty and military grandeur, with wooden windows, a basement, a horse stable, and strategically positioned defensive structures. Today, the Citadel of Qaitbay stands as one of the greatest military fortifications of its time, a testament to Egypt’s historical resilience and architectural brilliance. ________________________________________ If you’re looking for a destination that offers history, adventure, and stunning sea views, Alexandria should be at the top of your list.
