Start by mapping out the trenches, the location of the solenoid pit, controller, water mains connection, and other key elements. This ensures you dig in the right spots and have all the necessary materials. We recommend digging at least 200mm deep to prevent future pipe damage. Always dial before you dig and be cautious of surfaces. 04:22 Master Solenoid Installation Use a quality solenoid like Rain Bird or Hunter. We recommend DV100 solenoid valves, as they are pre-tested. A master solenoid is essential for controlling water flow at the plumber’s cut-in, preventing leaks. Ensure your master solenoid is properly thread-sealed and housed in a strong spotter box. Maintain access to the solenoid pit and the emergency isolation valve (tap) installed by the plumber. 04:41 Irrigation pipe installation Opt for strong class 12 PVC or blue line plumbing piping. Avoid using soft Low Density Poly Pipe for the main supply line. Make sure there are no joins under driveways or future hardscape areas. Protect the piping by placing it inside a sleeve when running under hardscapes for future access. 07:00 Irrigation Controller Hardwire the controller if possible, using a licenced electrician. Choose a reliable brand like Rain Bird and ensure the controller can handle future expansion. For example, if installing six stations in the front yard, consider a 12-station controller for potential backyard expansion or additional solenoids due to a pressure drop. Use an outdoor-rated controller if installed outside. 07:07 Irrigation solenoid installation Use pre-made solenoid manifolds with quality brands housed in strong commercial spotter boxes. Group solenoids together for easier maintenance. Cover holes with geo-fabric mesh to minimise dirt intrusion into the spotter box. 07:47 Wiring Irrigation solenoid valves All wiring should be in conduit with a continuous run from the controller to the solenoid valves. Avoid joins whenever possible, and if necessary, ensure they are marked and outside future hardscapes. Plan for enough wires for current and future needs. Use waterproof gel connectors and colour-coded wiring for ease of maintenance. 12:00 Sprinkler solenoid testing Always test your solenoids before backfilling to ensure proper function. This makes it easier to address any issues before everything is buried. We recommend flushing and testing the system before completing the backfill. ========================================================================== Subscribe to our channel @reticrenovation for more projects like this, and remember, if you need help with a project, reach out to us!
