Humans of New York is many things to many people. I found the Facebook page on one of the darkest nights of my new-found unemployment and over the years, to me, Humans of New York has become an international representation of an African concept…’Ubuntu’. There is a type of HONY effect that permeates every interaction with not just the platform and the stories, but the people joined together with a common interest in helping, advancing and supporting other individuals. ‘Ubuntu’ is a Nguni word which is hard to translate into English and has many meanings, all of which speak to the connectedness between people. It is also the basis of a humanist philosophy, ‘I am because we are’ or ‘a person is a person through other people’. As Archbishop Desmond Tutu describes Ubuntu: My humanity is caught up, is inextricably bound up, in what is yours’. We are all individuals but we are all part of humanity, we are all part of Ubuntu. We know it as ‘Humans of New York’ but we feel it as ‘Ubuntu of The World’.
