I recently found a tape with telephone intercept recordings and other various messages. It was made probably around 1995-96 since there are clearly recorded 2600Hz wire trunks, drum announcement machines, crossbar tandems and step-by-step local offices. Unfortunately the dialing part of the calls is completely ommited to save (in those days not really cheap) tapes. Here are some of the best samples I could recover: 0:30 US 212 through Alcatel E10 (so slow that they had to implement "connecting tone") 1:12 US over 2600Hz controlled trunk in '96 ?! 1:40 US 917 via 132-A2 2:33 US 212-999-1111 3:02 US 917 via 132-A2 different route 3:39 US 212 via AT&T 212-32 interenational gateway 4:45 US ATT wireless 22WD (DMS10?) 5:04 US NY Rockefeler university (ROLM PBX ?) 5:30 miliwatt tone ? 5:36 US not available from your calling area 702T 5:50 US NY CHIPS clearing house computer room PBX over 2600Hz trunk ?! 6:18 US NY Citi bank CENTREX ? 6:45 US 214-1T (AT&T ?) 6:55 US drum recording with relics of previous messages (1A ESS ?) 7:12 CANADA 905-A1 7:55 UK dial again adding 01 after country code 44 (2 different routes) 8:36 AUSTRALIA (Telstar) 8:41 SPAIN (?) 9:06 JAPAN KDD International Telephone Office (cool message) 9:51 CZECHOSLOVAKIA tandem through P51 step 10:00 CZECHOSLOVAKIA local through P51 step 10:33 CZECHOSLOVAKIA tandem through PK202 crossbar 10:59 CZECHOSLOVAKIA local through PK202 crossbar 11:35 CZECHOSLOVAKIA to US (fancy accent message) 12:34 HEBREW / ARABIC (?) *Any corrections are more than welcome. Its been 30 years.... The slideshow pictures are mainly of a large DID crossbar PBX office that is still a part of PSTN as of 2025 (!). I will cover this CO in my future videos.
